Angelika Milster & the MSA on NDR
That was quite a rush! Last Monday, a TV crew from NDR turned up unannounced at our school on Bogenstraße to film a short feature on up-and-coming musical theatre talent here in the north. As well as attending classes here, some of our students are already performing on the big stage. See for yourselves what the first steps in a young person’s stage career can be like…

Angelika Milster on NDR’s DAS! – A role model for young talents at the Musicalschule Ahrensburg
One of Germany’s best-known musical theatre divas recently appeared as a guest on NDR’s popular TV programme DAS!: Angelika Milster. As a singer, actress and musical theatre star, she has shaped the German-speaking theatre scene for decades. She became known to a wide audience particularly through her role as ‘Grizabella’ in the musical *Cats*. In her conversation with the team of presenters, she provided fascinating insights into her artistic development and her career – whilst also emphasising how important a solid education is right from the start.
Early support is the key to success
A central theme of the interview was the question of how one manages to make a name for oneself in the often tough world of the performing arts. Angelika Milster made it clear: talent alone is not enough – without consistent training, discipline and a solid artistic education, lasting success is hardly possible. This view is shared by the Musicalschule Ahrensburg, which has been dedicated to nurturing young talent for many years.
Whether acting, singing or dancing – at the Musicalschule Ahrensburg, children and young people from primary school age onwards are taught systematically and with great passion. The aim is not only to impart technical skills, but also to help the students’ individual personalities shine on the stage.
What makes Angelika Milster special
Angelika Milster
is so successful not only because of her powerful voice and stage presence, but also because of her authenticity. She embodies everything an up-and-coming artist could wish for: a passion for what she does, perseverance – and a willingness never to stop learning.
In an NDR interview, she spoke about how she herself was encouraged by professional teachers from an early age. She completed her acting training at, amongst other places, Margot Höpfner’s renowned school in Hamburg – an institution synonymous with discipline, technique and expressiveness. Even back then, it was clear to her that without a clear structure, regular practice and professional guidance, a career in the spotlight is hardly conceivable.
Parallels with the work of the Musicalschule Ahrensburg
What Angelika Milster describes in her interview is also the philosophy of the Musicalschule Ahrensburg: young talents need a safe environment in which they can grow and flourish. At the same time, the training must be of a high professional standard. That is why the school is taught exclusively by experienced stage professionals who pass on their knowledge with enthusiasm.
In small groups, the students learn to express themselves physically and vocally, to convey emotions convincingly and to perform effectively alongside others on stage. Many former students of the Musicalschule Ahrensburg have now found their way onto professional stages themselves or are studying at renowned universities both at home and abroad.
What we can learn from Angelika Milster
The TV programme featuring Angelika Milster is not only a look back at an impressive career, but also a look ahead: it shows what is possible if you start working on yourself early on – and never lose faith in yourself. Her message: “You have to be prepared to keep going, even when it gets tough.”
As a musical school, this is the attitude we too wish to pass on. Because every child who stands on the stage with a sparkle in their eyes has the potential to achieve great things – if they are given the right support.
Why musical theatre training makes sense from a young age
Many parents ask themselves: Isn’t it too early to join a musical school at the age of 6 or 8? Our answer is clear: No – quite the opposite. Those who start early not only learn the technical basics of singing, dancing and acting, but also develop self-confidence, team spirit and expressiveness. It is precisely these skills that are invaluable in all areas of life.
Furthermore, artistic training also fosters concentration, empathy and linguistic expressiveness. These are all qualities that help children at school and later in their careers. Last but not least, a strong sense of community develops in our courses and productions – friendships that often extend far beyond the classroom.
Conclusion: Inspiration from television – reality on our stage
The broadcast of the NDR programme featuring Angelika Milster was an inspiring moment for many viewers. For us as a musical school, it is a confirmation of what we experience every day with our students: Artistic success begins with a solid education, a love of movement and the voice – and a firm belief that every person carries a stage within them.
If you missed the programme, you can watch it on the ARD/NDR media library.
