Why sound recordings are so important for musical performances

When the curtain rises on a musical performance at the Musicalschule Ahrensburg, the audience is treated to a rousing show full of singing, dancing and emotion. However, not all vocal performances can be done live for technical reasons – particularly on outdoor stages or with complex choreography.

To ensure our students can still be heard, we rely on professional sound recordings. These are produced with enthusiasm and precision in MCE Shows’ in-house recording studio – and form an integral part of our musical training.

A glimpse into the recording studio: where stage magic is captured

The Musicalschule Ahrensburg works closely with MCE Shows, an experienced event partner with its own professional recording studio. Here, our students have the opportunity to record their songs under ideal conditions – whilst also learning the basics of music production.

For many, it’s their first time in a real studio – an exciting experience. After some initial nerves, a creative and relaxed atmosphere quickly takes hold, where everyone works with great enthusiasm and dedication.

Learning through fun: what students take away from the recording sessions

• Concentration and precision: Every detail counts in the studio. The students learn to listen carefully and to perfect their singing technique.
• Self-awareness: Hearing your own voice through headphones takes some getting used to – but it fosters an awareness of sound, expression and technique.
• Teamwork: During ensemble recordings, everyone has to be in sync – an important experience for any musical production.
• Self-confidence: Feeling proud of your own recording at the end boosts self-confidence and motivates you for the next performance.

How the recording sessions work

Before the studio session, the songs are worked on intensively in class – with a focus on breathing technique, articulation and expression. Through so-called ‘pre-listenings’, the students practise in advance so that they can work with the greatest possible concentration in the studio.

During the recording, an experienced producer is on hand, not only to offer technical advice but also to reassure and motivate the pupils. The individual vocal parts are recorded either solo or as an ensemble, and re-recorded as many times as necessary – until everything is just right.

More than just a backup: the educational value of recording studio work

Even though the recordings sometimes serve ‘merely’ as a backup or alternative to live singing, there is much more to it than that: they foster musical skills, boost stage presence and open up new perspectives – such as careers in technical fields like sound engineering, music production or songwriting.

Some of our older students have even discovered their professional passion through this experience. Recording studio work is therefore a valuable part of the holistic education at the Musicalschule Ahrensburg.
