Workshop on Song Interpretation with Gonzalo Campos López

We have some fantastic news for everyone who not only loves musicals but also wants to really tell a story on the stage: For our workshop ‘Stage Basics: Song Interpretation’, we’ve been able to secure Gonzalo Campos López as a guest lecturer – currently appearing as Simba in Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ on stage in Hamburg.

This workshop is a special opportunity to work with a professional musical theatre performer who takes to the stage night after night in front of large audiences. The focus is on the question: How does a song become a scene? How do you manage not only to sing in tune, but also to shape a song emotionally in such a way that it truly connects with the audience?

The workshop is intensive, practical and inspiring – and just the thing for anyone who wants to develop their musical and acting skills.

What is the ‘Stage Basics: Song Interpretation’ workshop about?

Singing on the stage means more than just good technique. In musicals in particular, it’s the combination of voice, lyrics, emotion and stage presence that counts. In this workshop, we’ll work on interpreting songs in such a way that they tell a story – authentically, clearly and with a strong stage presence.

Among other things, you can expect the following content:

  • Song interpretation: understanding the lyrics, emotional depth and storytelling
  • Stage presence and expression: what makes a performance credible?
  • Solo and group work with professional feedback
  • Practical insights: How do professionals work on large-scale productions?

The workshop is structured so that you can both work actively on your own material and learn a great deal simply by watching others.

Behind the scenes: How we’re preparing for the workshop in Ahrensburg

A workshop like this only achieves its full potential when the participants are well prepared. In the weeks leading up to the event, our instructors have been working specifically on the fundamentals in our regular classes – elements that Gonzalo will build upon: text work, phrasing and the conscious use of voice and body in ensemble performance. Hauke Wendt, a conductor and musical director with decades of experience in productions such as *Cats*, *Dance of the Vampires* and *Disney in Concert*, has been working on the musical aspects with the advanced students. Jacqui Dunnley-Wendt, our artistic director with an international solo career in West End and Hamburg musical productions, has been coaching the students in stage interpretation in parallel. This rehearsal work at the studio at Bogenstraße 47 in Ahrensburg forms the foundation upon which a guest workshop with a practising musical theatre performer can truly build.
