What is the difference between jazz dance and musical theatre dance?

Jazz dance is a distinct dance style with roots in African-American dance, which emphasises technique, isolations and dynamics. Musical theatre dance combines elements of jazz with acting and singing – here, the movement tells a story. At the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School, you’ll learn both approaches: in our dance classes, you’ll practise the technical fundamentals of jazz and contemporary, whilst in the musical theatre classes you’ll learn to bring this technique to life on stage through scene work and expression. This is what creates the versatility that characterises professional musical theatre performers.
