Hammer to Fall: Corona project with Brian May (Queen) 2020

Over the past few weeks, in line with the regulations issued by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein, we have been running our classes at the musical school in full, albeit entirely online. Although this form of teaching is certainly not ideal, we have made every effort to maintain teaching operations as far as possible, and we are delighted that the vast majority of our students have embraced these changes so openly.

Hammer to Fall

As all the public performances we had planned and organised for our students this summer have been cancelled due to Covid-19, we have taken up the challenge set by one of our idols, Brian May, the guitarist of the legendary rock band Queen, to record his hit ‘Hammer to Fall’ together with him. The vocals were rehearsed exclusively online with Jon Mortimer, as were the choreographies by Jacqui Dunnley-Wendt and Heidi Lammi-Brink. All participating students recorded their own videos, which Jon Mortimer edited together for sound and Marko Formanek for video.

Brian May’s band consists of: Jon Mortimer (keyboards), Torben Widdermann (guitar) and Hauke Wendt (bass & drums).

The legend and the musical school

All the groups at the musical school – from the Musical Mini Movers right through to the adult tap dancers – have taken part in this project: a song, incidentally, that has long been one of the favourite songs by one of the musical school’s founders, Jacqui and Hauke’s absolute favourite band, Queen. We hope you enjoy the result of this project. Our thanks go not only to our fantastic team and our equally fantastic students, but also to their families, who helped out as camera operators and coaches – and, of course, to the man who started it all: Brian May!
