Frequently Asked Questions

What age group are the courses at the MSA suitable for?

We offer courses for all age groups: from the Musical Mini Movers (3–6 years) through to Kids (primary school children), Teens (secondary school pupils) and Young Adults, right up to the Musical Adults (18+). No previous experience is required – we have the right starting point for everyone.

What is the difference between jazz dance and musical theatre dance?

Jazz dance is a distinct dance style with roots in African-American dance, which emphasises technique, isolations and dynamics. Musical theatre dance combines elements of jazz with acting and singing – here, the movement tells a story. At the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School, you’ll learn both approaches: in our dance classes, you’ll practise the technical fundamentals of jazz and contemporary, whilst in the musical theatre classes you’ll learn to bring this technique to life on stage through scene work and expression. This is what creates the versatility that characterises professional musical theatre performers.

At what age can you start learning tap dancing?

At the Ahrensburg Musical School, we offer tap dancing for all ages – from ‘Happy Feet’ for primary school children, through ‘Fab Feet’, to ‘Elite Feet’ for advanced learners and adults. You can join at any age; no previous experience is necessary. Our tutors bring their professional stage experience directly into the lessons and, as well as teaching a sense of rhythm and coordination, they also instil a love of dancing together.

Why is ballet at a musical theatre school different from that taught in a classical studio?

Our ballet classes at the Ahrensburg Musical School focus on the ‘ballet basics’ – the functional technique and posture that form the foundation for all modern dance styles such as jazz, modern and contemporary. It is not about rigid perfection as in a classical ballet studio, but rather a holistic form of physical training that instils elegance and strength without the pressure to perform. Our pupils benefit directly from our tutors’ international stage experience – technique that has been tried and tested on the world’s major stages is incorporated into every class.

What is the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School?

The Ahrensburg Musical School (MSA) is a theatre school for all age groups – from children aged 3 and over to adults. With us, you’ll learn acting, dance and singing as part of a holistic approach. We are not a traditional music school, but a school for the performing arts with a genuine sense of being on stage.

The Ahrensburg Musical School is recognised as a preparatory course for vocational training and is a division of Musical Creations Entertainment GmbH in Ahrensburg.

Where do the MSA lessons take place?

Our lessons take place in Ahrensburg, conveniently situated in the district of Stormarn. We are easily accessible from Hamburg, Bargteheide, Großhansdorf, Trittau and the whole region.

The address of our studios is: Bogenstraße 47, 22926 Ahrensburg.

You can find directions under ‘How to find us’ on our website.

Does the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School also offer one-to-one lessons?

Yes, we offer one-to-one lessons in singing, acting and dance. These are particularly suitable if you want to prepare specifically for an entrance exam, get ready for a particular event (a milestone birthday, wedding or similar) or simply wish to receive more intensive guidance.

If you’re interested, just get in touch – we look forward to hearing from you!

How often do the lessons take place?

Regular lessons at the MSA take place once a week, excluding public holidays and school holidays in Schleswig-Holstein. Depending on the course, each lesson lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.

There may be additional rehearsals before performances – these will be announced in good time. You can find our current timetable on our website.

Can I join at any time, or only at the start of the school year?

To join group lessons at the Ahrensburg Musical School, you must first successfully complete a taster session. We usually offer these twice a year: typically shortly after the summer holidays in Schleswig-Holstein and at the end of January. Group lessons then begin shortly after the taster sessions. Between the taster session and the start of lessons, we can discuss whether and how you can join the MSA, and if you do decide to join, we’ll sort out the necessary (but manageable!) paperwork. To take part in a taster session, you must book via our website.

For one-to-one lessons, the easiest way is to contact us directly to arrange whether and how it is currently possible to start at the MSA.

We’ll let you know about taster sessions and when you can join as soon as possible.

How can I book a taster lesson?

You can book a trial lesson easily and exclusively via our website. Select the course you’re interested in and reserve your place online. We accept various payment methods. Once you’ve placed your order, you’ll receive a confirmation email, followed by another containing all the important details.

The taster lesson is non-binding and gives you the chance to get to know MSA, our tutors and our teaching style, whilst also giving us the opportunity to get to know you and see whether – and if so, how – MSA is the best fit for you.

Which subjects are taught at MSA?

At the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School, we teach three core subjects:

– **Acting:** improvisation, scene work, character development and stage presence

– **Dance:** From the basics of ballet through jazz dance to musical theatre choreography

– **Singing:** vocal training, breathing techniques, and solo and ensemble singing

Depending on the course, these subjects are either combined or explored in greater depth individually. Our experienced tutors have professional theatre backgrounds themselves.

What is the difference between a musical theatre school and a music school?

Unlike a traditional music school, our focus is on the performing arts: we combine drama, dance and singing into a holistic approach to teaching – just like in a musical. With us, you won’t just learn an instrument; you’ll learn to use your whole body and your voice as a means of expression. Stage work, improvisation and group performances are an integral part of our approach.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

No, not at all! Our courses are structured in such a way that even complete beginners can get off to a good start. Many of our students took their first steps in acting, dance and singing here at our studio, or gained their first stage experience here – and in doing so, most of them surpassed their own expectations.

How much does a trial lesson cost?

A taster lesson at the MSA costs €17. If you decide not to enrol at the Ahrensburg Musical School afterwards, we hope you’ve still had a lovely time with us — but if you do decide to join us, we’ll refund the full cost of the taster lesson!

How much do lessons cost at the Ahrensburg Musical Theatre School?

At MSA, the rule is: one course, one clear monthly fee — with no hidden costs or complicated tiered pricing. The monthly fees for group courses are zwischen 44,00 € und 74,00 € per month. A taster lesson costs €17 and will be credited in full should you subsequently enrol. Private lessons available on request.

Are there any performances, and when is the next show?

Stage performances are an integral part of the MSA concept. Every course works towards joint performances — ranging from presentations for family and friends to large-scale shows. Highlights to date include: the Ahrensburg Town Festival, Altonale, and our own productions such as ‘Ritter Rost’ and the MSA anniversary show. We publish dates on our website and in our newsletter.

What happens during a taster lesson?

Just pop in wearing comfortable clothes and join in straight away — singing, dancing, acting. Our tutors give everyone a warm welcome, whether you have previous experience or not. Afterwards, you can decide, without any pressure, whether you’d like to continue. There’s no automatic enrolment.

Can my child use musical theatre as a stepping stone to a career on stage?

Yes. The MSA is recognised as a preparatory course for vocational training. With our entrance exam preparation course, we offer an intensive programme for entrance exams to art colleges. At the same time, the majority of our students are here purely for the enjoyment of it — both are possible at the MSA.

Are there any holiday activities or workshops?

In addition to our regular lessons, we offer workshops and intensive camps — including taster sessions, even when there’s no trial lesson period running. See our workshop page for the latest dates.

How big are the groups?

We deliberately keep our groups small — a maximum of 20 pupils per course. This enables our tutors to support each child individually.
